Port of Tyne Website Hit by DDoS Attack

Port confirms operational systems had not been affected.

The Port of Tyne has been hit by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, which hit its website.

According to BBC News, its website was down for some time on Tuesday, but a spokesman for the port said operational systems, which are separate, had not been affected and all data was "safe and secure".

In an email to SC UK, a spokesperson for the Port of Tyne confirmed that only the website was subjected to the DDoS attack, "which caused some disruption to the Port’s website traffic on Tuesday August 6th."

The Port confirmed that the website is separate from all the Port’s operational systems, none of which were affected in any way, and all data is safe and secure. "Full website accessibility was restored quickly and the Port is working with all relevant parties to investigate the source of the attack," they said.

Donny Chong, director at Nexusguard, said the attack shows that it’s not just businesses or traditional critical national infrastructure at risk, but “successful attacks can quickly grind exporting systems to a halt and may open up further vulnerabilities if IT and security systems are taken offline.”
