UK regulator probes X for illegal AI-generated sexual images

UK media regulator Ofcom has launched a formal, high-priority investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform X under the Online Safety Act.

UK media regulator Ofcom has launched a formal, high-priority investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform X under the Online Safety Act.

The investigation follows public outcry over its integrated Grok AI tool being used to generate and share illegal sexualized images of women and children, reports The Guardian.

The investigation will assess whether X failed in its legal duties to assess risks, prevent users from accessing illegal content -- specifically nonconsensual intimate images and child sexual abuse material -- and to implement effective age verification for pornography.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall condemned the "vile" and illegal content, stating that Ofcom has the government's full backing and can impose fines up to 10% of global revenue or, in the most severe cases, seek a court order to block UK access to the site.

The probe was initiated after an urgent assessment of X's response to Ofcom's concerns, with the regulator citing reports of Grok being used to create deepfake images by digitally removing clothing from photographs.
