UK Foreign Office Confirms Cyberattack, Investigation Ongoing

The UK Foreign Office has confirmed it is investigating a cyberattack discovered in October.

Senior ministers acknowledged a breach, but cautioned against speculative reports attributing the incident to Chinese state-sponsored actors, reports The Register.

Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant stated that "there certainly has been a hack," though he described media claims, including a report in The Sun alleging the theft of tens of thousands of visa application details, as over-egging the available facts.

Bryant emphasized that preliminary findings indicate a "low risk" of individual harm, and that the security vulnerability was patched quickly.

The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office provided a limited statement, reiterating that it takes system security "extremely seriously" and is working to investigate the incident.

This disclosure follows recent warnings from security firm Check Point about Chinese cyber-espionage groups targeting European governments.

The UK intelligence community has consistently labeled China an "epoch-defining challenge," with GCHQ director Anne Keast-Butler noting last year that more resources are dedicated to countering Chinese cyber threats than any other mission.
