The UK's Legal Aid Agency (LAA) has confirmed that a data breach affecting its IT systems in April 2025 resulted in the theft of sensitive records, with some dating back as far as 1978, according to Bleeping Computer.
The LAA, which manages the country's Public Defender Service and oversees significant legal funding, initially disclosed the cyberattack in early May 2025, warning of potential compromise of payment information for legal aid providers. Subsequent analysis revealed a more extensive breach, with attackers stealing applicant and recipient data from 2010 onward, including personal details, financial information, and criminal history.
Data belonging to legal aid providers, such as contracts and financial information, was also compromised. The agency now states that approximately 250,000 records predate 2007, with the earliest verified record dating back to 1978. The Ministry of Justice has committed over £200 million to modernize digital services and strengthen cybersecurity across legal aid services in response to this incident and other recent cyberattacks targeting UK organizations.
