LinkedIn's profile viewer data access sparks EU privacy debate

A dispute over LinkedIn's profile viewer feature could set a significant legal precedent in the European Union concerning how companies handle customer data, according to a recent report by The Register.

The core of the issue lies in the differing levels of access to profile viewer information provided to premium versus free LinkedIn users. While premium subscribers can see a detailed list of who has viewed their profile over the past year, free users receive only generalized information.

An unnamed LinkedIn user, seeking to exercise their GDPR Article 15 right to access personal data, requested a full list of their profile visitors. LinkedIn denied this request, citing data protection concerns. Privacy organization Noyb has taken up the case, arguing that users have a right to receive their data free of charge, regardless of whether the company intends to sell it.

Noyb contends that since LinkedIn already provides this data to premium users, withholding it from free users upon request would contradict the GDPR's intent and potentially violate the rights of those whose data is being disclosed. This case highlights the tension between a company's business model and users' data access rights under GDPR.
