Industry urges reform to retain women in tech

A new industry review warns the UK's digital skills shortage could cost the economy more than £10B without structural reform to attract and retain women in technology roles.

A new industry review warns the UK's digital skills shortage could cost the economy more than £10B without structural reform to attract and retain women in technology roles, IT Brief United Kingdom reports.

Research from the City of London Corporation's Women Pivoting to Digital Taskforce highlights persistent vacancies across data, cybersecurity, and cloud disciplines, linking the gap to barriers facing mid-career women.

Leo Labeis, CEO of REGnosys, said rigid hiring criteria and narrow definitions of experience exclude candidates with non-linear careers, arguing that "retention, progression and reskilling must be central" to closing shortages. Industry leaders also point to under-representation in senior technical posts despite balanced graduate intake.

Onepoint Consulting executive Sangeetha Viswanathan emphasized that leadership credibility stems from delivery expertise and consistent decision-making, not a single management style. Companies are expanding apprenticeships, certifications, and re-entry pathways to strengthen capability while lowering recruitment costs.

Executives say inclusive leadership models, flexible work structures, and formal mentoring are critical to sustaining careers and broadening the talent pipeline.
