Government and SANS Launch Cyber Team Competition

Aimed at 18-25 year olds, the contest will see the students tested and gain mentoring.

A UK Cyber Team Competition has been launched to offering young people the chance to start a career in cybersecurity and represent the UK on the world stage.

Announced by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, it will allow 18-to 25-year-olds to represent the UK Cyber Team in global competitions, and provide hands-on experience, training, and mentorship to launch careers in cybersecurity.

The simulations will provide real-world scenarios in areas like cryptography, digital forensics, web exploitation and network security, and top performers will earn a place on the UK Cyber Team and gain access to advanced training supported by industry experts, networking opportunities with agencies and leading cybersecurity firms, and mentorship to help develop their careers.

Best and Brightest

Cyber Security Minister Feryal Clark said the “best and brightest minds” are being sought to represent the UK on the world stage. “I encourage all eligible young people with a passion for cybersecurity and technology to take on the challenge and be part of something truly impactful,” Clark said.

The competition, delivered in partnership with the SANS Institute, is open to all UK residents aged 18 to 25 with an interest in cyber security. Applications are now open, where participants can register and access preliminary challenges.

James Lyne, chief strategy and innovation officer at SANS said: “We are a firm believer in uncapping the next generation of cybersecurity professionals in the 18-25 year old bracket.

“By immersing young talent in real-world cyber scenarios and providing direct mentorship from industry leaders, we are not only cultivating the next generation of highly skilled professionals but also reinforcing the nation’s cyber defence capabilities. These types of competitions are essential in showcasing the UK’s cybersecurity strength, bolstering national defence, and in the spirit of friendly competition with other nations we in turn build international relationships.”
