U.S. Courts Step Up Security as Hackers Target Confidential Filings

Judiciary tightens cybersecurity protections after sophisticated cyber-attacks hit case management system.

The U.S. Federal Judiciary is bolstering protections for sensitive case documents in response to a series of cyber-attacks on its case management system.

According to a statement, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts is collaborating with Congress, the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and other federal partners to address the risks and impacts of these attacks.

Officials are enhancing security measures to block future attacks and breaches, while working closely with courts to minimise the impact on litigants. Although most court filings are publicly accessible, a small portion contain confidential or proprietary information, making them attractive targets for cyber-criminals.

Courts are also rolling out stricter protocols to restrict access to sealed documents, with controls designed to ensure they are handled only under closely monitored circumstances. Judicial leaders say enhancing system security remains a top priority, and have pointed to significant cybersecurity upgrades made in recent years.

The Judiciary acknowledges that evolving cyber threats, especially against legacy systems, require constant adaptation and close cooperation with law enforcement, national security agencies, and cybersecurity organisations.
