The medical information were from Tyne and Wear NHS Trust.
Confidential medical information has been found among household waste.
The haul included a letter sent to a patient's GP following an appointment - complete with sensitive personal information that was marked "Private and Confidential", according to media reports.
The documents originated at the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust, which confirmed it had undertaken a full investigation.
Dr Rajesh Nadkarni, the trust's deputy chief executive, said: “A full investigation has been completed, and we are assured that all of the confidential information held by the medical student has been recovered. We have been in contact with those affected by this breach of confidentiality, and are providing them with updates on the outcomes of this investigation."
