Northern Schools and Academy Locked Down by Ransomware

Rhysida threatening to release data on dark web tomorrow.

The Rhysida ransomware gang is demanding £1.2 million from a school.

Saying if the payment is not made, it will sell personal data stolen from its IT systems on the dark web, the attack affected schools across the north west of England.

The attackers infected the IT network with ransomware, leaving 10 of schools with limited access to computers, laptops, printers and even photocopiers.

Mark Robertson, CRO at Acumen Cyber, said: “What we are seeing here is the real ruthlessness of ransomware criminals. The criminals are not backing down and it’s now only a matter of days before sensitive school data will be published all over the dark web.

“These schools now face the extensive and costly process of rebuilding systems. Given ten schools have been impacted, the costs of this could exceed the ransom demand, so this should be a lesson for all organisations.”
