Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, is currently under intense scrutiny regarding financial donations and potential breaches of parliamentary rules. Two separate rows concerning financial support are placing him under fresh pressure, with the possibility of a by-election in his Clacton constituency, based on information published by Politico EU.
Farage is being investigated by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards for failing to declare a £5 million donation from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, received in early 2024. MPs are required to register financial interests from the 12 months prior to their election, though Farage claims the donation was a personal, unconditional gift.
A breach of rules could lead to sanctions, potentially triggering a by-election if he is suspended from the House of Commons for more than 10 sitting days. Additionally, Farage faces accusations of failing to declare support from another crypto entrepreneur, George Cottrell, who allegedly funded his private security, staff, transport, and accommodation.
Political rivals, including the Liberal Democrats, Labour, and Conservatives, have called for investigations into these matters, seeking transparency. Despite these controversies, Farage has a history of political survival, and Reform UK maintains a significant lead in opinion polls. Source: Politico EU
