PSNI staff to be awarded data breach compensation

The Police Service of Northern Ireland will provide workers affected by a major data breach three years ago with a universal compensation offer of £7,500.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland will be providing workers affected by a major data breach three years ago with a universal compensation offer of £7,500, with a total fund of £119 million ringfenced for payments starting in April, according to The Register.

The breach, considered one of the most significant in UK history, occurred when a spreadsheet containing officers' personal details, including names and, in some cases, home addresses, was accidentally published online in response to a Freedom of Information request.

Given Northern Ireland's history of conflict, the exposure posed serious safety risks, leading many officers to report health issues, relocate, or install enhanced home security.

Police Federation chief Liam Kelly called the offer "substantial and major progress," noting it would allow many to "draw a line under the case."

However, he acknowledged that some "particularly vulnerable" colleagues may continue with individual legal proceedings. Edwards Solicitors, representing about 5,000 of the 9,483 affected individuals, stated that while many will welcome the closure, the offer may not suffice for those most severely impacted, whose cases will proceed.
