UK National Crime Agency Regional Head of Multi-Threat Investigations Gavin Webb has been named as an Officer of the British Empire for helping take down the LockBit ransomware-as-a-service group.
UK National Crime Agency Regional Head of Multi-Threat Investigations Gavin Webb has been named as an Officer of the British Empire for helping coordinate the Operation Cronos law enforcement effort that took down the notorious LockBit ransomware-as-a-service group in 2024, according to The Register.
The NCA highlighted that disrupting LockBit, which was responsible for a quarter of all cyber intrusions at its peak, was a "tremendously complex operation."
Webb's coordination ensured that all participating international and domestic forces executed their responsibilities in the correct order.
While not a technical specialist, Webb's orchestration from behind the scenes was instrumental in the operation's success.
He was among eight NCA officers recognized, including Kay Taylor, who received a CBE for securing convictions in major cases like the EncroChat bust, and Fiona Nicolson, awarded an MBE for pioneering financial crime processes that recovered hundreds of millions for victims.
