EU vows to defend tech laws despite US retaliation threats

Geopolitical tensions between the European Union and the United States over technology regulation are set to intensify in 2026.

The Register reports that geopolitical tensions between the European Union and the United States over technology regulation are set to intensify in 2026, as Brussels vows to defend its landmark digital laws against American threats.

Despite recent U.S. warnings promising retaliation, EU Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera stated the bloc would not undo regulations like the Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act simply because Washington does not like them.

These laws have already been enforced with fines against major U.S. firms, including Meta and Apple, under the DMA, and have been used to investigate X, formerly Twitter, under the DSA.

The U.S. Trade Representative has condemned these rules as discriminatory, arguing they unfairly target American tech giants while European companies operate freely in the U.S. market.

In a December social media post, the USTR warned it would "use every tool at its disposal" if the EU did not change course, hinting at potential fees or restrictions on European service providers like SAP and Capgemini.
