Former CIA Analyst Pleads Guilty Over Intelligence Theft

Asif Rahman accused of sharing details with an unauthorised third party.

Former CIA analyst Asif Rahman has pleaded guilty to his involvement in the theft and sharing of intelligence details with an unauthorised third party.

According to SC US, Rahman shared the details over the course of 2024, including numerous classified documents involving the CIA's intelligence operations with another country. The U.S. Department of Justice said Rahman accessed, photographed, and shared these details, with the images' eventual online exposure stymying operations.

Rahman was also noted to have attempted to conceal malicious activity by removing or editing journal entries and destroying a router and mobile device.

"Today's guilty plea demonstrates that the Justice Department will spare no effort to swiftly find and aggressively prosecute those who harm the United States by illegally disclosing our national security secrets," said assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's National Security Matthew Olsen.

With the plea deal, Rahman may only need to serve half of the up to 20 years combined sentence for two counts of willful retention and transmission of classified information charges.
