DNS Hijacking Emerges As Key UK Cyber Threat

DNS hijacking named as the most persistent threat.

Cyber-criminals and state-backed actors are increasingly exploiting domain name systems to hijack government-linked web domains for malicious purposes.

According to Infosecurity Magazine, Nick Woodcraft of the UK Government Digital Service  outlined a strategy that includes classifying DNS threats as top-tier risks, assigning clear ownership of the namespace, building a comprehensive domain inventory, and instituting daily monitoring.

At Infosecurity Europe 2025, Gordon Dick of Nominet emphasised DNS hijacking as the most persistent threat, whilst Woodcraft urged organisations to train DNS managers, enforce strong security practices with registrars, and remain vigilant of lookalike domains.

"Today, we can warn them about potential issues and expiring domains," Woodcraft said, highlighting how proactive oversight is key to mitigating escalating DNS-based attacks.
