State-Backed Cyberespionage Against European Telcos Escalates

Danish agency raises threat level to high.

European telcos were disclosed to have been subjected to mounting cyberespionage intrusions by state-sponsored threat operations over the past few years.

According to The Record, Denmark's cybersecurity agency said that "Foreign states hope to gain access to large amounts of data about customers' use of the providers' infrastructure by spying on telecom and internet service providers.”

Announcing that it was raising the threat level to “high,” the Danish cybersecurity agency said “there have been several attempts at cyber espionage against the European telecommunications sector in the past few years” due to “increased interest in the telecommunications sector in Europe by state hackers.”

The threat assessment did not name the hacking group or country behind the malicious activity.

The alert comes over a week after the U.S. indicted a dozen Chinese state-backed hackers over their involvement in attacks that sought to aid the country's intelligence gathering efforts.
