Civil coalition, unions slam EU plan to weaken data privacy

A coalition of 127 civil society groups and trade unions has issued a forceful open letter condemning the European Commission's proposed digital policy reforms.

A coalition of 127 civil society groups and trade unions has issued a forceful open letter condemning the European Commission's proposed digital policy reforms.

The coalition labeled the reforms a massive "rollback of digital fundamental rights," reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.

The leaked draft of the EU Digital Omnibus, set for official publication on November 20, reportedly contains changes that would significantly weaken core provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the ePrivacy directive, and the AI Act.

The coalition, which includes prominent organizations like European Digital Rights and noyb, argues that what is being presented as a "technical streamlining" is in reality an attempt to "covertly dismantle Europe's strongest protections against digital threats."

Specific concerns include proposals to limit the GDPR's scope to only "directly revealed" sensitive data, thereby removing protections for inferred information; allowing more personal data to be used for training AI systems without sufficient safeguards; and eliminating requirements for AI developers to register in a public database.
