IT Leaders Fear Data Growth, Worry on Overload

Half admit that the unmanageability of data had hindered their ability to gain operational insight.

UK IT decision makers are increasingly struggling to manage rising volumes of business data, with many fearing the risks it poses to security, compliance, and operational effectiveness.

New research from cybersecurity and observability firm Splunk found that 58 percent of UK IT leaders fear the exponential growth of data within their organisations, with 68 percent warning that data overload could make their business operationally less effective.

The survey of 500 UK IT decision makers from companies with more than 250 employees found that 97 percent had seen a rise in demand for data-driven insights over the past two years, with nearly a third seeing their data volumes double, and one in ten seeing them triple in the last three years.

Despite this demand, 46 percent admitted that the unmanageability of data had hindered their ability to gain operational insight, with 45 percent expecting this to remain a problem for the next three years.

Petra Jenner, GM & SVP EMEA at Splunk said: “Data is the backbone of today’s digital business models – yet many companies face a paradox: they want to be data-driven but struggle with overload and poor data quality.

“Digital resilience starts and ends with good data. Without visibility and control over their data, organisations risk non-compliance, security gaps, and could fall behind the competition.”

With 67 percent of IT leaders saying that data growth has itself become a rising security risk, and 64 percent concerned about future non-compliance fines, many organisations are now caught between the need for data-driven decision making and the operational and regulatory risks that data growth brings.
