IRS, ICE Data Sharing Agreement Opposed by EFF

EFF says information sharing could prompt the increased prevalence of wrongful ICE action.

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service's deal to share taxpayer information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been flagged by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to cause "record linkage errors" that could prompt the increased prevalence of wrongful ICE action against taxpayers.

Reported by FedScoop, in an amicus brief filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the EFF said “those errors result from such mundane issues as outdated information, data entry errors, and taxpayers or tax preparer submission of incorrect names or addresses."

Meanwhile, EFF legal director Corynne McSherry emphasised the data-sharing deal to prompt mistaken identity cases, which will only be exacerbated by artificial intelligence. "We want this information to be separated, not for it to be easily combined. Unfortunately, there are a number of folks at the executive branch … [that] want to change those rules, and that’s going to be dangerous for all of us," said McSherry.
