Bournemouth Council Apologises for Email Address Exposure

Personal email addresses were not BCC'd in communication.

Apologies have been sent to residents from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole after a data breach exposed hundreds of personal emails.

According to local media reports, a council officer sent an email to hundreds of addresses about a new system to manage local land charges, planning and building control.

However Jeff Hanna, cabinet member for transformation, resources and governance, said the email was sent without recipients being blind copied. The email was recalled “straight away” after it was sent on Friday January 17, and is said to have followed the council’s internal protocols.

Cllr Hanna added: “We have confirmed the matter does not need to be reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), because of the vast majority of the addresses being business rather than personal emails, and this is deemed low risk. Apologies have been sent to everyone who received this email.”
