Berlin Eyes Cyber Defence Centre with Israel

Move aligns with Berlin's increasing reliance on Israeli expertise.

Germany is seeking to establish a joint cyber research centre with Israel and intensify collaboration between their intelligence and security agencies.

According to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt during a recent visit to Israel, and reported by Reuters, Dobrindt unveiled a five-point initiative aimed at creating a German "Cyber Dome" to strengthen the country's civil defence as part of its broader national security strategy.

"Military defence alone is not sufficient for this turning point in security," he said, stressing the need for cyber readiness alongside traditional defence.

This move aligns with Berlin's increasing reliance on Israeli expertise amid concerns over mounting threats from Russia and China. The initiative complements domestic calls, such as one by Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Soeder, who advocated for the purchase of 2,000 interceptor missiles to replicate Israel's Iron Dome. The proposed cooperation underlines Germany's intent to modernise its cybersecurity and bolster NATO's collective resilience.
