UK cybercrime significantly outpaces police staffing growth

TechRadar reports that cybercrime in the UK is expanding faster than dedicated policing resources, with reported incidents climbing 88% from 774,537 in 2020 to 1,458,704 in the latest figures, while personnel handling such offenses rose only 31%, according to Forbes Solicitors.

Each staff member is now responsible for substantially more cases, creating a widening imbalance. The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill is expected to become law this year, and the government is also considering banning or restricting ransomware payments.

Forbes' Craig MacKenzie said new laws are positive but would bring compliance requirements tougher to meet without sufficient policing. Proposed penalties could be linked to a percentage of global turnover, increasing potential liabilities. MacKenzie said it's hard to justify asking businesses to take on bigger responsibilities and greater liability when police staffing isn't growing anywhere near as fast as offenses. Organizations are advised to deploy up-to-date antivirus software and properly configured firewalls to reduce exposure.
