Cyberattack deterrent for display devices unveiled by NCSC

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre has commercially released its first branded hardware device, SilentGlass, a threat-agnostic appliance that physically sits on HDMI and DisplayPort connections to block malicious data channel traffic before it can manipulate or alter monitor displays, according to The Register.

Licensed to Goldilock Labs for production, the device has already been deployed across sensitive government environments for years and is now available to businesses and consumers amid the NCSC's broader warning that display screens represent "a hugely attractive target" for espionage-focused adversaries.

While some security professionals have publicly questioned the real-world prevalence of monitor-based attacks, NCSC Chief Technology Officer Ollie Whitehouse emphasized that the device protects "previously vulnerable IT infrastructure with unprecedented ease." The launch aligns with NCSC CEO Richard Horne's characterization of China as "a peer competitor in cyberspace" during a period when the agency manages a steady stream of state-linked significant incidents.

Goldilock Labs co-founder Stephen Kines framed SilentGlass as addressing an overlooked security boundary, arguing it reflects a broader shift toward treating physical connectivity as a point of enforceable control rather than an assumed trust layer, targeting critical national infrastructure operators and enterprises where the same risks persist.
