Britain and Germany partner to counter Russian cyber threats

Britain and Germany have announced a new partnership to counter cyberattacks and sabotage, particularly from Russia. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is heading to Berlin for talks to solidify the arrangement, which involves sharing information and coordinating efforts to monitor, deter, and disrupt hostile activity, according to The Register.

The joint initiative, formalized by the Kensington Treaty signed in July 2025, aims to address growing concerns over Russian state-sponsored cyber operations and sabotage targeting critical infrastructure, businesses, and democratic processes. While the announcement lacks specific operational details, funding, or named agencies, it signals a unified front against escalating threats.

This partnership comes amid stark warnings from European intelligence agencies about Moscow's activities. Germany's foreign intelligence chief recently cautioned that the confrontation with Russia has entered a more dangerous phase. Both nations are bolstering their defenses, with Britain fast-tracking legislation to designate state-backed organizations and establishing a National Centre for Information Defence to combat foreign disinformation campaigns. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to enhancing cybersecurity and national security in the face of persistent state-level cyber aggression.
